It’s College Football Time

College Football has begun which means it is Fall.  I have been following certain teams every year and the two most important teams are the NAU Lumberjacks and the NIU Huskies.  I attended both universities and have enjoyed attending the games while in college and watching them on tv since my college days.  NAU - Northern Arizona University is a challenge to catch on tv because they do not get much national coverage.  NIU - Northern Illinois University is a little easier to catch on TV.  My next team is University of Michigan for one reason Jim Harbough is their coach.  I also follow the University of Florida Gators because my kids are fans.  The final team I follow is Navy because we are Navy.  So those are the five teams I will be following this year.  Pretty much the same as last year but I dropped Tennessee simply because I don’t live there anymore and don’t hear about them anymore.  Watch my own scoreboard below and let the season begin. Go LUMBERJACKS, go HUSKIES, go Michigan, go Gators, go Navy!

Trying Something New

Instead of using regular pasta noodles with my spaghetti sauce I tried something new and very low in calories.  It was spaghetti but came from a plant.  It is a Japanese invention from the Konjac plant.  The root is used to create noodles and all sorts of other items.  The noodles are full of fiber and absorbs water.  I used the spaghetti noodles but you don’t boil them.  First you squeeze all the water out of the packages and then you rinse the noodles for a few minutes.  You then stir fry them for about a minute and a half.  Pour them in a bowl and top with your favorite sauce.  The noodles absorb the flavor of your sauce but the texture of the noodle is weird.  Jenny had bought a few packages of Konjac noodles and she did not like them so I guess I will continue to use them until they are gone.  I probably will not be buying this product because the texture is too weird.

Soccer Practice

Rory had her first soccer practice last night and it was everything I thought it would be with six 4 year olds out on the field.  There are three girls, Rory, Kingsley and Emmy and three boys.  The three girls are all best friends and were in tumbling together.  It was organized chaos but the coach, new to this age range was patient and kind.  Rory first loved then got frustrated then loved it again.  It was fun and I look forward to her games.  I took Rory for ice cream after her practice to celebrate her first soccer experience.

Creating Door Prizes

If you are new to my blogs then you may be wondering why I am creating Door prizes.  Well, one of my hobbies is paper crafts aka greeting cards, etc.  My sister Pam, whom I would do anything for,  is a Stampin Up demonstrator and gives classes every other month.  It is a two day event that averages over 40 people during the event.  She calls its Pam’s SAS, (stamp and stack) and it is a great way to get together with people who have the same interests and create cards.  At one of Pam’s SAS’s you make 10 cards, get lunch and snacks and win a door prize and all for the low price of $35. I make her door prizes to help her out and yesterday I spent the day creating some.  Check out the picture to the right! Now all I have to do is make 8 sets of each Door prize, 76 cards in all!

A Sad Day In Jacksonville

What started as a great day with going to church and having a great lunch with Sharon after church turned into a very sad day when I got home and turned on the TV and saw a special report.  There had been a mass shooting in Jacksonville at The Landing which is a popular attraction in Jacksonville.  Three people were killed including the gunman and several people injured.  What started as an innocent video game tournament turned into a deadly shootout due to the gunman losing the video game.  RIP to the innocent victims and I hope all that were involved during this incident will recover soon.  It truly was a sad day in Jacksonville.

I Have A “New” Car

After a frustrating search for a car I was beginning to think I was going to have to get a vehicle with lots of mileage and other issues but since I could not sleep I began searching for used cars in this area early Saturday morning on both Car Guru and Auto Trader.  I put in my preferences on Car Guru and up popped a reduced listing for a car in our area and at my price range.  We decided to go with private owners because the used car lots we visited were not exactly helpful because I wanted to buy with cash and not get it financed.  A little later Saturday morning we went to check out the car and I bought it.  It is a 2006 Chrysler Seebring with 78,000 miles.  There is a couple of items to attend to along with a good cleaning Of the interior but all in all it should work out well.  I even have a car seat for Rory already!  So after I get it registered, tagged and insured I will be ready to roll!  Thank you to Pam, Brian, Jenny and Nate who made this all possible and help me find my “new” car!

Honoring A Fallen Officer

The Clay County Sheriffs have lost one of their own and yesterday there was a processional for the fallen officer.  Officer Ben Zirbel, a 12 year veteran of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department was killed while on duty after a terrible accident on his motorcycle.  The processional started in Jacksonville, through Orange Park and Middleburg and ended in Green Cove Springs where he was laid to rest for the night.  Today is his funeral.  Jenny and I felt we should attend the processional and we drove over to a spot on Blanding Blvd and Baxley.  We arrived early and we were lucky that there was a nice breeze blowing because it made the 95 degree temperature bearable.  The intersection had several police cars waiting to move into action and block the intersection once the processional arrived.  Once they were in position the officers stood at attention until the processional was through. There were many agencies represented to honor Officer Zirbel and lots of people lined the streets to honor him.  We were glad we did.  Thank you Officer Zirbel for serving; may you Rest In Peace.  To Officer Zirbel’s family and friends I am so sorry for your loss.  It was truly an emotional day.
